Top Winter Sun destinations

If you’re thinking of jetting off for some winter sun here are some destinations to consider for a great winter break.


The furthest east of the Canary Islands, the island has been popular with holiday makers, averaging only 16 days of precipitation between December and February and with winter mean temperatures of 18ºC and 6-9 hours of sunshine per day, you can see why.

Costa Rica

The central American country has coasts on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. You can view both from the summit of the Irazu volcano. With soft beaches, average sunshine hours of between 6 and 8 hours a day and low temperatures of 18ºC in winter. It’s a great winter sun destination.

Cape Verde

The Cape Verde islands are an archipelago of ten volcanic islands 350 miles west of the Cape Verde peninsula in West Africa. The climate is milder than the African mainland with average temperature sin the winter months staying around 22-25ºC. The average sunshine hours also keeps quite consistent between 6 and 8 hours a day.


Cuba is a popular destination for winter sun seekers due to it’s year round warm climate and high hours of sunshine, averaging 8 hours a day throughout winter. It takes a bit of getting used to – there are no McDonalds or even Coca-Cola – and credit cards won’t be accepted anywhere, but the historic buildings and culture will make it a holiday to remember.


The South East African country is off the beaten track for holidaymakers, but has enough to offer for a holiday destination including beaches and National parks like the Bazaruto National Park, filled with turtles, dolphins and dugong. The temperatures stay a steady 23-28ºC throughout winter and with 8 hours of sunshine a day it’s a great winter sun destination.


The sunshine state is aptly named, with the state getting an average of 8 hours sunshine every day in the winter months and average temperatures of 16-20ºC. There is also loads to do in the state including visiting the theme parks Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. Why not visit Kennedy space centre, where Apollo XI left for its famous trip to the moon, or take a trip round the everglades on an airboat.


The largest and most populated city in the UAE has grown rapidly over the past 30 years and is now a favourite tourist destination. Dubbed the shopping capital of the middle east it has over 70 malls and is famous for its trade in gold. The winter temperature averages between 19 and 24ºC. While you’re there you can visit the Burj Khalifa’s visiting platform on the 828m high building, which will give you a view across the entire city. Enjoy the beach at Kite beach or take a trip into the desert and ride camels for a true middle east experience.
